Chesin: to be a matchmaker or broker (lit. pull thread)

Instead of Cupid, the Chinese have Yuht Louh ("the old man in the moon") acting as a matchmaker. The old man carries around a book and a bag with him wherever he travels. The book records the names of the destined couples. The bag contains red threads, which he uses to tie together the feet of the boy and girl who are to marry.

Happy Crochet Week! Yes, National Crochet Week occurs March 16-22.

Recently, I tried my hand at crocheting. I attempted it in order to give one of the characters floating around in my head an authentic hobby. Typically, I do this research in reverse--that is, I bestow a hobby I already know upon a character. Here's how far I've gotten:

Failure.

On the other hand, you can check out the amazing creations of my friend Raychel on her Etsy page: http://www.etsy.com/shop/ReasonsLikeSeasons

Next time I'll stick with something I know works...

I had no idea there was even such a thing as crochet week :) That's kind of awesome!

In your defense, that yarn looks like it would be hard to learn with.

Thanks for dropping by! I know, the things you find on the Internet... It's a week promoted by the Crochet Guild of America during March (National Craft Month).

Thank you, Sarah. Unfortunately, I had other yarn, too, and it did not fare any better.

I love crocheting, even though I can only get the simple stitch down. Just have to practice, don't show that yarn fear, it feeds on fear. You have to wield your crochet hook like the mighty sword it is. You make one small loop the yarn on one finger, capture the yarn with the hook and pull through the small loop. Then you repeat, because that yarn will be slain!

Yes, I should think like a fearless warrior, Sopphey! Hmm, maybe I should take lessons from you. Writers' retreat, anyone?
